FOREWORD
At the 1998 ASME/JSME Joint Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference in San Diego, we introduced a new international symposium devoted to the computational aspects of fluid interactions with thermal, chemical, physical, and structural phenomena, i.e. fluid-media interactions. In many branches of industry, such as the chemical process industry, the automotive and aerospace dynamics plays a role in its interaction with chemical reactions, plasma physics, structural load, thermal radiation, etc. The new Symposium wished to recognize recent developments in the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in such technologies, that require going beyond the application of fluid dynamics alone. The Symposium instantly became a great success, with over 70 papers by authors from over 20 different countries, published in two proceedings volumes. One year later, the second Symposium was held in Boston, Massachusetts, and the Symposium organizers received an ASME-PVP Division Award for organizing the best session of the 1998 PVP conference. The third Symposium was held in Atlanta, Georgia, on 2001, with a similar success.
With the 4th edition being held during the 2002 Joint ASME/JSME/KSME/European
Organizations PVP Division Conference in Vancouver, Canada, the “International
Symposium on Computational Technologies for Fluid/Thermal/Chemical/Stress
Systems with Industrial Applications” continues to be the largest Symposium
of the ASME PVP Division Conference.?This illustrates the importance and
actuality of the issues addressed in this Symposium. This year, the Symposium
consists of 19 sessions, during which 74 contributed and 7 keynote papers
are presented by authors from 16 different countries. With some 60% of
the participants coming from academia and research institution, and some
40% affiliated with industry and industrial CFD consultants, we hope that
the Symposium will stimulate a higher degree of coordination between industrial
CFD engineers, software developers, consultants and academic researchers.

As a new and very successful item, this year’s Symposium featured an evening panel session on “Present and Future of Industrial Strength CFD Codes”, in which leading experts from CFD code vendors, chaired by Prof. Brian Spalding, presented vision statements and discussed future needs and developments. Here, we wish to thank the panelists for their valuable contributions to this session.
Finally, we wish to express our gratitude to all the participants who, through their interesting contributions, made the Symposium to a success, to the many reviewers that assisted us in evaluating and maintaining the quality of the presented papers, and to ASME PVP division and Fluid Structure Interactions Committee for their support in organizing this Symposium.
We are also very glad to inform you that the Fluid-Structure Interactions Session from our 2001 Symposium (Atlanta, Georgia) has won the Best Technical Session Award of the ASME Pressure Vessels and Piping Division. The award will be presented to us during the Honors Luncheon.
Symposium papers are now available in eight ASME volume publications [1-8] and represent excellent reference for researchers, University students and professors describing various case studies, industrial applications of methods and techniques (CFD), discussing solved industrial problems and general topics of fluid-media interactions (“multi-physics” simulations).
Our next, i.e. fifth anniversary, Symposium will be organized in conjunction
with the 2004 PVP Division Conference, which will be held in San Diego,
bringing us back to the city where our Symposium took off in 1998.
Our present and future focus will be on using computational technologies
for building better engineering products. Detailed information about the
